How long can I stay?
The duration of your time in project depends on where you are looking to go. In most ofour projects you can go for a minimum of two weeks. It may seem like a short amount of time but you’d be amazed at how much you can achieve in 14 days! Some projects, due to the relational or research nature of the work, require a longer commitment from 6 months to a year. In these longer projects you would gain a far deeper understanding of the culture, the people & the work that is involved on a long-term basis.
When can I start & how soon should I apply?
For short-term experiences we would recommend you apply at least a month inadvance of your trip in order that we can help you fully prepare – that said, if it’s a last minute inspired idea you’ve had then we can work extrafast to help you be a spontaneous traveller! For long-term projects (6 months – 1 year) applications really need to be in to us at least three months ahead of the start date. This is because the long-term places fill fast and weneed to work with you in more detail to prepare for this experience. Also, for some people going away for 6 months or more means there’s many aspects of life back home to consider & sort out, such as your rent / mortgage / job or studies etc and we want to help ensure you’ve covered everything. The start dates for each project vary and sowe update our website regularly with new start dates throughout the year.
What is the process after I apply?
Once you submit your application we will be in contact with you to arrange a time to chat about your chosen project and to get to know you a little better, it’s also a time for you to ask any questionsyou have. Normally this takes place over the internet so that we can fit around your schedule. From there we confirm your place & begin to plan the details of your trip. Where possible we also then put you in contact with former volunteers who have spent time in your project, or with the programme manager in that country so that you can ask any further questions you have. We ask you for a small deposit to hold your place in the project & then the fun really begins!
Can I go with a group of friends?
Of course! If you have a group of people who wish to travel together we can tailor make your trip for you and ensure that you have all you require. Simply let us know your thoughts as to where and when you’d like to go, the number of people involved and we can assist you every step of the way.
Do I need qualifications?
Generally speaking you do not need anyqualifications for our projects – just a desire to help and use your unique skills and talents. Part of volunteering is also about learning new skills and gaining a greater level of experience. Time in our projects will enable you to increase your knowledge in areas of: conservation, community development, social support work or even sports and nutrition.
We do have a small number of projects which, due to the nature of the work, require volunteers to have a degree or to be slightly older, but we make this very clear in our project information. What is also possible, in selected long term projects, is for you to gain a professional qualification which can be of great use when it comes to applying for work in the future.
Do I need vaccinations?
If you are travelling to Africa, Asia or South America there will be a number of vaccinations you will be advised to have before setting off. We will provide you with a comprehensive list of the vaccinations you will require following your interview. Ultimately it is your responsibility to make sure that you are covered & that you have comprehensive medical insurance.
